UEA The Street

  • Sensitive Grade II listed site
  • Paving, street furniture, drainage and lighting improvements.
  • £410,000 budget

The University of East Anglia (UEA) Campus is located within a parkland landscape, laid out in accordance with Sir Denys Lasdun’s vision and masterplan. ‘The Street’ itself extends out as a corridor of external space, from The Square, situated in the heart of the UEA Campus. It is a busy and vibrant space, with issues related to security, safety and maintenance. The brief was designed to tackle these issues through repaving ‘The Street’ with improved provision of street furniture, lighting, and drainage.

‘The Street’ is a Grade II listed site with the square adjacent being Grade II*. Due to these sensitivities we worked closely with English Heritage and Local Planning Authority throughout the project. This led to a sensitive selection of paving materials in order to create a cohesive continuity between the two sites. Improvements for accessibility were a key consideration throughout the design process to alleviate safety and security concerns.

Once on site, the construction phase required a thoroughly planned programme in order to work around users and reduce impact on the adjacent shops and SU bar.
