Biodiversity Net Gain News!
February 12th 2024 is a landmark day with all future new development in England needing to achieve a minimum 10% biodiversity net gain (BNG). Landscape architects and ecologists are guardians of our external landscape and are now tasked with ensuring this target is met and wherever possible, exceeded.
We might ask, why does it matter? The principal aim is to make developers think before they remove or destroy habitats and landscape features such as trees, hedgerows and ponds. Any such loss will require replacement either on site or elsewhere. BNG legislation will be enforced through the planning process and seeks to minimise and mitigate against loss and damage to our fragile natural habitats.
At WWA we are excited to work with our clients to achieve this ambitious and essential target for all new developments.
